Spotlight on the Last 6 Brooklyn Nets All-Stars
The top 22 players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) were recently selected to participate in the 2020 All-Star Game. Because there are 30 teams in the league, some teams, like the Brooklyn Nets, won't be represented in the game. Other teams, like the Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, and Houston Rockets, have two players participating in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.
Since the 1967-68 season, 40 players have represented the Nets at the NBA All-Star Game, although the team has only sent six players since the 2007-08 season. Here’s what you need to know about these six:
1. D'Angelo Russell (2018-19)
A 23-year-old native of Louisville, Kentucky, D'Angelo Russell broke a four-year absence of Nets players at the All-Star Game when he was named an All-Star in the 2018-19 season. It was his second year in Brooklyn after being acquired in a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers and he produced a career-best 21.1 points and 7 assists per game that season.
He also achieved career-high marks in field goal percentage (43.4), three-point field goal percentage (36.9), and minutes (30.2). Russell was drafted to Team Giannis in the All-Star Game and had 6 points, 3 assists, and 1 rebound in 12 minutes. Team LeBron defeated Team Giannis 178-164 in the game.
"Just to get this opportunity, I'm lost for words," said Russell in February 2019 after learning he had been selected to play in his first All-Star Game. "The coaches that I've had, my teammates that I've met throughout this journey, it's something that you can't take away. It almost feels like a degree. You can't take that away from somebody. You get that one All-Star, two, you never know when you're going to get that opportunity again. I'm forever blessed for that."
2. Joe Johnson (2013-14)
Before Russell, Joe Johnson was the last Nets player to participate in the All-Star Game. Johnson, who retired following the 2017-18 season, played in his seventh and final All-Star Game in 2013-14 and first as a member of the Nets. He represented the Atlanta Hawks in his prior six All-Star Game appearances.
Johnson averaged 15.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game that season on 45.4 percent shooting. He had 5 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist in 10 minutes at the 2014 All-Star Game as the Eastern Conference scored a 163-155 victory over the Western Conference.
3. Brook Lopez (2012-13)
Now in his second season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Brook Lopez played with the Nets from 2008 to 2017, during which time he scored 10,444 points. He is the franchise's all-time leader in that category as well as field goals and blocks. Despite his consistency over the years, Lopez only played in one All-Star Game.
The 7-foot, 270-pound center was selected to represent the Nets in the 2013 All-Star Game and recorded 3 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds in 10 minutes as the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 143-138. Chris Paul was named All-Star Game MVP that year.
4. Deron Williams (2011-12)
A three-time NBA All-Star, Deron Williams represented the Utah Jazz of the Western Conference at the 2010 and 2011 All-Star Game. Following a trade to Brooklyn in 2011, he played for the Eastern Conference at the 2012 All-Star Game. The 6-foot-3-inch point guard averaged a career-best 21 points per game as well as 8.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in his first full season with the Nets.
Although the East lost a close 152-149 decision to the West, Williams finished third on the team in scoring with 20 points, behind only LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. He also had 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Williams last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016-17. He concluded his NBA career with averages of 16.3 points, 8.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game.
5. Devin Harris (2008-09)
Selected fifth overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2004 NBA Draft, Devin Harris played for five different teams over the course of his 15-year career. While he played 10 of those seasons in Dallas, he had his best year with the Nets in 2008-09.
Harris averaged a career-high 21.3 points per game that season and was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. The East lost the game 146-119 and Harris had 6 points and 1 rebound in 17 minutes.
6. Jason Kidd (2007-08)
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, Jason Kidd is a 10-time All-Star and nine-time All-Defensive team member. He represented the Nets in five All-Star Games, the last of which was in 2008 when, as a starter, he had 2 points, 10 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals in 25 minutes as the East scored a 134-128 victory over the West.
Kidd, who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks two days after the All-Star Game, played 51 games with the Nets that season and averaged 11.3 points, 10.4 assists, and 8.1 rebounds per game. He last played with the New York Knicks in the 2012-13 season.
